Rabid Raccoon Found on Old Snow Hill Rd. in Pocomoke

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – The Worcester County Health Department has confirmed a positive rabies case in a raccoon found in the vicinity of Old Snow Hill Road in Pocomoke City.

This case comes just after a confirmed rabid skunk was found in Berlin on Mar. 23.

If you, your family or your pets have had contact with the rabid raccoon, contact the health department’s Office of Environmental Health immediately at 410-352-3234. Contact includes bites, scratches or other direct contact to persons or pets.

Additionally, pet owners should immediately contact Animal Control or local authorities to report sick animals and any animals acting unusually. Officials also urge maintaining the following practices to keep yourself and loved ones safe:

  • Do not handle your pet if it has contact with a wild animal.
  • Make sure all your pets (especially outdoor pets) have current rabies vaccinations. Maryland and Worcester County law require rabies vaccinations for any dogs, cats, and/or ferrets aged four months or older.
  • Do not let your pets roam free or leave food outdoors. This will attract wild and stray animals to your property.
  • Teach children to stay away from wild animals and animals they don’t know.
