UPDATE: Capitol Police Provide Details on Suspicious Package Found at Dover DMV
UPDATE: The Delaware Capitol Police are investigating the incident that prompted an evacuation at the Dover Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on Tuesday morning.
Police say a DMV employee reported finding a suspicious package outside of the Dover location. Responding officers confirmed the presence of a package and evacuated the building as a precaution. The Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit responded to inspect the package. Once it was determined to be safe, employees and customers were allowed to return to the building.
Through investigative measures, officers identified the individual who left the package, identified as a backpack, outside the building the previous day after conducting business at the DMV. Investigators say they believe the backpack was left behind unintentionally, and have no evidence to suggest there was any intent to cause harm or disruption.
DOVER, Del. – The Dover Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was briefly evacuated on Tuesday after a suspicious package was found at the location.
At 11:40 a.m. on Mar. 10, Delaware DMV announced in a post to social media that law enforcement had responded to the Dover location to inspect the package and clear the site. Officials said the building was evacuated out of an abundance of caution. As of 1:30 p.m., the Dover DMV was given the all-clear.
The circumstances in Dover follow an earlier announcement of technical difficulties across all Delaware DMV locations, resulting in longer than normal wait times.
