Sheriffs Warn of Fake Rental Listings in Accomack Co.
ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. – The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about rental scams appearing on social media platforms.
Authorities say scammers are copying photos from real home listings and advertising the properties far below the normal rental price in order to attract victims. Scammers proceed to ask interested renters to send deposits, application fees, or rental payments before the victim ever sees the property.
Most recently, listings have appeared on TikTok and Facebook advertising homes in Onley and Painter that are not legitimate.
Warning indicators of a rental scam include advertising rent that is much lower than other homes in the area, requests to send money before viewing a property or paperwork, a “landlord” claiming they cannot meet in person, and the same photos appearing in multiple listings. Officers say to never send money before viewing a listing in person, and be sure to verify listings through reputable rental websites or a licensed realtor.
If you believe you have encountered a scam or have already sent money, contact the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office at 757-787-1131.
