Rural Caucus in MD legislature
Annapolis, Md. – WMDT spoke with Del. Sheree Sample-Hughes on Monday’s Crossover Day to discuss major pieces of legislation and what developments out of this year’s General Assembly have stood out to her so far. One of them, she says, has been the creation of a Rural Caucus.
“There’s no year that’s been the same,” Sample-Hughes said. “What I will say is certainly now we’re in a position of this freer environment as far as really getting down to issues that particularly affect the Eastern Shore.”
Besides Sample-Hughes, who serves Dorchester and Wicomico Counties, a number of other delegates representing the Eastern Shore are also members of the caucus. Members include H. Kevin Anderson (R-District 38A) representing Somerset, Worcester, and Wicomico Counties and Kevin B. Hornberger (R-District 35B), representing Cecil County. Delegate Jefferson Ghrist (R-District 36) serves as co-chair and represents Kent, Queen Anne’s, Cecil, and Caroline Counties.
The caucus is a bipartisan effort with three members each from party and its two chairs each representing one party each.
Sample-Hughes said having the caucus will be instrumental to helping rural concerns being heard at the state level.
