New bills aim to protect educators, staff in schools
DELAWARE – Two bills aimed at supporting Delaware educators and improving classroom environments across the state were introduced in the Delaware General Assembly Thursday.
The “Educator and Education Staff Bill of Rights” establishes a clear set of fundamental rights for all public school employees, like the right to be treated with civility and respect, have professional judgement and discretion respected, and work in a safe environment and defend themselves or students from physical harm, among others.
Meanwhile, the “We Got Your Back Act” looks to provide legal protections against physical violence.
The Act elevates to a class C felony the reckless or intentional causing of physical injury to a school employee, contractor or subcontractor.
The protection would apply to a wide range of personnel including teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and custodians.
