Job fair comes to Wor-Wic Community College
Salisbury, Md. – Wor-Wic Community College welcomed its annual job fair to over 40 local businesses and organizations on Thursday.
“Because we’re a community college and we do serve our community, and it’s important to us that our students and our alumni and the community find gainful employment,” Wor-Wic Community College Director of Career and Testing Services Lori Smoot said. “This is just a wonderful way for our employers that we also work with to have the opportunities to network with our students, make sure that they’re progressing along in either their educational career paths or those that may not be attending Wor-Wic.”
One of the businesses in attendance was Chesapeake Shipbuilding. Lead recruiter for Chesapeake Shipbuilding John Snelson said he enjoys the opportunity job fairs have to engage with students. He said they enjoy speaking with students who are continuing their education for different trades. He also says the job fair enables them to give advice to students and alumni “who may not know what they want to do.”
“We can give them some kind of advice, which is mostly, ‘hey, by the way, check out Wor-Wic’s fantastic trades programs,’ as well as talk to people that maybe want an office level position, and they’re looking for some variety in the area,” Nelson said.
For first-year business major Shayla Morant, the job fair is about getting in front of potential employers. Resumes in hand, she said she was aiming to hand them all out and make connections.
“ It’s really important to, like, put yourself out there, you know, just so people can know who you are and what you can do,” she said.
Snelson said job fairs like this are important because it can be challenging to keep talent in the area.
“We can sometimes suffer from a brain drain or a skill drain in general because they’re looking to go into a higher paying area or a place that has more opportunities, and they might not necessarily realize the amount of opportunities available around them,” he said. “And particularly community colleges do a fantastic job of providing skills and education to everyone, right?”
Smoot said Wor-Wic will host a Spring Open House on March 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is open to anyone who may be interested in a Wor-Wic credit program for a degree or certificate or the Work-Wic’s continuing education and workforce development programs. It is free and open to the public. She said there will be food and President Dr. Deborah Casey will be in attendance to speak with attendees.
