Inmate Death Under Investigation at Eastern Correctional Institution

WESTOVER, Md. – The Maryland State Police (MSP) are investigating the death of an inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) in Somerset County.

The inmate, identified as 31-year-old Quran Middleton, was pronounced deceased on Tuesday, Mar. 10 by emergency medical service personnel. Middleton has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy to determine his cause and manner of death.

Officials say the MSP Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit shortly after midnight regarding an inmate death. Middleton was reportedly found lying on the ground and unresponsive in his cell by ECI officers.

Upon completion, the investigation will be presented to the Office of the State’s Attorney in Somerset County for review.
