Help raise awareness this World Down Syndrome Day

DELAWARE World Down Syndrome Day is this Saturday, and the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware is raising awareness all week.

This Thursday, the association is partnering with The Starboard in Dewey Beach, inviting adult members with Down syndrome to be guest bartenders for a night. They will work shifts alongside community members to raise money for the organization. The fun continues on Sunday, when the group will host its “Run for the Buds” 5K walk and run.

The Starboard will offer a post-run brunch with special discounts.

Lauren Camp Gates, executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware, said, “We have over 700 people with Down syndrome that we serve, and many of them are your neighbors, classmates, colleagues. It’s important for people to understand that individuals with Down syndrome, while they may have differences, are just like you and me. They like to be part of the community and to be supported and loved. We’re here to spread that message.”

The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware is encouraging everyone to wear bright, fun-colored socks in support of World Down Syndrome Day and the Rock Your Socks campaign.
