REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The Rehoboth Beach Police Department has arrested a Dover man after a domestic disturbance that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police arrested 39-year-old Sonny Watkins on charges of first degree reckless endangerment, first degree unlawful imprisonment, third degree assault, malicious interference with emergency communications, and related traffic charges. Watkins also had a capias warrant for failing to appear at Family Court. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $46,501 secured bond.

At 1:13 a.m. on Mar. 15, officers responded to the 100 block of Second Street for a report of a domestic disturbance in progress. Upon arrival, officers located Watkins leaving the area in his truck, before stopping and initially arresting him for driving under the influence. He was taken into custody without incident.

Officers determined that Watkins had been in an argument with his girlfriend, during which he struck her multiple times, causing injury. Watkins also prevented her from leaving the premises and took her cell phone away while she was speaking with 911 dispatchers to gain assistance.
