City of Cambridge & Rescue Fire Co. Make Plan for Train Garden

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The City of Cambridge and the Rescue Fire Company (RFC) have come to an agreement surrounding the future of the City’s beloved Train Garden.

Officials say Mayor Lajan Cephas Bey and the City Commissioners recently met with the RFC leadership to discuss the future of the Train Garden, currently located in the Old City Hall building. The garden’s location came into question at the end of February when renovations were announced for the location, which formerly housed RFC and city offices, including the city clerk’s and mayor’s offices.

In an announcement on Thursday, City officials stated that renovations to the exterior and clock tower of Old City Hall would begin this spring and going into the fall. Following these improvements, the City will then hire asbestos migration contractors. The RFC will work with the contractors to allow them full access to the space in the building occupied by the Train Garden, so the second phase of construction can begin in the coming years. In the interim, the Train Garden will remain in the old engine bays.

“Both the City and RFC apologize for any confusion regarding the long-term location of the Train Garden. Our shared priority has always been to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all involved during the building renovation process,” the announcement read. “Any consideration of a temporary relocation was made with these priorities in mind and in alignment with the long-term interests of the City, RFC, and the community.”
