Worcester County working on 2027 Fiscal Year Budget

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – Worcester County is working on its 2027 Fiscal Year budget, and they need to properly distribute funds to the various departments and agencies.

Commissioner President, Ted Elder, says he would do as much as possible from the state. “Anything we can get from the state is welcome.”

Governor Wes Moore announced his latest budget proposal, and under that proposal, Worcester County is expected to see $10 million. Half of that amount will go directly to projects focusing on construction and infrastructure.

President Elder, said they are still in the early stages to see how the General Assembly sorts out. “There were over 600 bills introduced in the Senate, and over 400 by the House. So until those bills, we see what that means? A lot of those are really costly to the county.”

Groups like the Board of Education and departments like the Sheriff’s Office need to be funded. Sheriff Crisafulli spoke with WMDT about how deputy salaries could be beneficial for recruitment and retainment.

“Recently in the last several months, we have lost a few deputies who were gonna make the jump and join our team. But they looked next door, and saw another agency close by that was doing laterals a step up, and we lost them.”

The Ocean City beaches are having replenishment done. And the Snow Hill Promenade Project is in need of funding. Betsy Long of Downtown Snow Hill Inc. states the revitalization is important for the town.

“Our organization aims to support the commercial district downtown, the businesses, the community, and really Snow Hill as a whole through those endeavors.”

For Elder, he says the commissioners are in wait and see mode. “Until we shake out a lot of that stuff, we are not going to know for sure which direction to take with the budget.”
