Wicomico County Library Closes Pittsville Branch
(PITTSVILLE, Md) – After more than 20 years, the Pittsville branch of the Wicomico County Public Library closed its doors for the final time this week.
As library director Seth Hershberger tells us, the building was only ever meant to be a temporary location.
“It turned into kind of a 20 year stretch that we were there in that trailer. It was never up to standards. The people of Eastern Wicomico deserve a better space to spend time because libraries aren’t just for books. They’re also a public place,” says Seth.
We met with the Pittsville branch’s Manager Kerry O’Donnell as she reflects on being able to foster a community out of the old location as a trailer on the grounds of the town’s elementary school.
Kerry tells WMDT, “We have worked with families. We’ve had fathers come in with their daughters on their hip to get their first library card, and now those kids are in college or they’re coming back with their own kids. So the people of this community made this library what it is.”
What comes next is moving a couple of miles up the road to Parsonsburg, where the county library system is preparing to open a new branch. With so much more to offer to the East Wicomico County community.
“We are going to have much more space for books. We’re going to have a dedicated programing room, which is high tech with all of the new technological things that you can play with. We’ve got study space and most importantly, we now have comfortable space where people can come and sit and spend time,” says Kerry.
The Wicomico County Library plans to open the branch on Friday, March 20th.
