Truck Plunges Into Water From Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel; Search Underway for Driver

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — A tractor-trailer plunged into the water early Sunday from the southbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel near Fisherman’s Island, prompting an ongoing search for the driver and lane closures along the bridge, authorities said.

Officials said the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. on the west side of the southbound span, just south of Fisherman’s Island. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The impact caused damage to a guardrail and curb along the bridge, and maintenance crews were dispatched to make emergency repairs. Authorities said the U.S. Coast Guard and the Virginia Beach Marine Police are assisting in the search for the missing driver.

The crash remains under investigation by Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Police.

As of Sunday morning, one southbound lane had reopened around the crash site while other lanes remained closed for repairs. Officials urged motorists to expect delays in the area.
