St. Michaels Fire Dept. Responds to Early Morning Chimney Fire
WITTMAN, Md. – The St. Michaels Fire Department, Inc. responded to a chimney fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
At 1:37 a.m. on Feb. 10, crews responded to a reported dwelling fire on New Road. They were accompanied by firefighters from the Tilghman and Easton fire departments. Upon arrival, crews located smoke showing from the chimney of a two-story house. The occupant was reportedly attempting to extinguish the fire on the exterior of the home.
Crews worked on both floors to extinguish the fire, and it was ultimately contained do the fireplace. Officials say the fire started as result of a fire lit in an old, deteriorated fireplace. The flames extended through degraded mortar joints to the backside of the fireplace, as well as the subfloor underneath. Residents are urged to keep fireplaces, woodstoves and chimneys clean and in good working condition.
