Pittsville Woman Opens Food Pantry

(PITTSVILLE, Md) – A Pittsville woman is lending a hand to her neighbors in rural Wicomico County who are struggling to put food on the table. That’s why she decided to open a food pantry right out of her own shed.

Meet Melissa Andujar a local who saw a problem late last year when it came to people in the rural community putting food on the table.

And it’s a situation she’s all-too familiar with.

Melissa tells WMDT, “There’s not much locally. And we’ve been there and things like this have helped us with hard times. So I just felt the need to do more for my immediate community because there’s not much locally.”

Melissa says that plenty of people in town either need to head as far west as Salisbury, or as far East as Ocean Pines to get most of their food.

That’s why she wanted to open a food pantry out of her home business, Memorable Edibles By Melissa.

She says, “A lot of people can relate. The Delmarva power bills are increased. We have a 1400 square foot home. Our bills are 5 to $700 a month. Sometimes after paying the bills, there’s just not real food shopping money.”

Monday is the first day Melissa has the pantry up and running.

“It is our opening day. It is the first day where we are full with what we have available. We are hoping for some more donations,” says Melissa.

And she’s hoping that there will be community support as she tries to help feed her community.

Melissa says, “Call us, call us. You know, even if it’s outside of our open hours call. And if there’s something that we’re able to do, we would be more than happy to just call. That’s all it takes.”
