Overnight Warming Shelters Instituted in Somerset, Wicomico Co.

SOMERSET & WICOMICO COUNTIES, Md. – Emergency overnight warming shelters have been instituted in Somerset and Wicomico Counties ahead of Monday night’s freezing temperatures, and following this weekend’s harsh blizzard.

Somerset County

The Somerset County Commissioners will open Washington Academy and High School as a warming shelter starting at 5:00 p.m. Residents should bring blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, medications, and personal hygiene items. Those with special dietary need should bring appropriate food and supplies.

Pets are welcome. Pet owners are asked to bring animals’ vaccination records, medications, and crates, if available.

Transportation to the shelter is available as needed. To arrange transportation, call 410-651-3912.

Additionally, the City of Crisfield will opening the Crisfield Fire Department as a warming center, also starting at 5:00 p.m. Transportation to the firehouse can be arranged at 410-651-0707.

Wicomico County

The Wicomico County Health Department has announced that the Midway Room at the Wicomico Civic Center will be used as a cold weather shelter. The Civic Center was open  to Wicomico County residents throughout Monday as a warming center.

Officials say cold weather shelter operations will begin at 5:00 p.m. Food and water will be provided, but residents are asked to bring snacks and necessary medication. Animals brought to the center will be picked up by Animal Control and taken to a different location.
