Norfolk State defeats UMES in competitive basketball matchup

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – A battle in the Hytche Athletic Center as the (8-19) Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks welcomed the Norfolk State Spartans (13-14) in a Mid Eastern Athletic Conference Game.

Early in the conference game, Dorian Staples with the huge 3 ball to get the crowd going. He was a force for the Hawks and kept them alive in various stretches throughout.

The senior from Fredericksburg, VA wasn’t done, his teammate, Senior Michael Teal, finds him again for the three ball, and Staples connects. He has 19 points for the night.

The Spartans, however, came to play. Devon Ellis drove to the basket and hit a spin move on the way plus the foul call. Then early in the 2nd half Melo Baines using his body to get to his spot with the sky hook.

Norfolk State was just too much here Anthony McComb splits the defenders late in the 2nd half, getting the pass out to Dian Wright Forde – and he does the rest, draining the 3 ball.

Wright-Forde drives to the hoop, scores for the Spartans again, he had 10 in the game tonight. Made some big plays for Norfolk State late.

The Spartans made all the plays down the stretch and they won the game 70 to 66.

UMES will take on Coppin State in Baltimore on Saturday.
