GLP-1 medications without diet and exercise could put weight back

Salisbury, Md. – Famous GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by controlling hunger and cravings, according to Dr. Fabricio Alarcon, medical director of Healthy Outcomes Medical Weight Loss Center based in Georgetown, Del.  However, without proper supervision and guidance, he said they can be over prescribed leading to hardships with weight loss down the road.

Alarcon, who specializes in Obesity Medicine told WDMT that without proper guidance and nutrition, those who use GLP-1 medication drugs are at risk of gaining the weight back. Though they can help work wonders, Alarcon says they are not “magic” and can’t fully replace regular diet and exercise. He said diet and exercise are still the best way to lose and keep the weight off.

“The challenge we’re seeing a lot of people come after not properly dieting, using unsupervised GLP-1 because they work so well,” Alarcon said. “They lose their weight, but in an unhealthy way.”

Alarcon recommends those who are considering using medication to lose pounds to also work with a nutritionist or medical professional to keep a healthy weight.
