Families of SU Students Involved in Fatal Crash Seek Community’s Support
SALISBURY, Md. — Two weeks after one Salisbury University freshman died, and two others were injured in a car crash, their families are calling on the community for help raising funds for funeral and medical costs.
On February 11, three students crashed into Coulbourn Mill Pond in Salisbury. First-year student Matthew Garcia of Rockville, Maryland was killed in the crash.
19-year-olds Andy Fon Koh of Takoma Park, and Eyuael Zewdie of Washington D.C. were injured and flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to Shock Trauma. Now, Garcia and Fon Koh’s families are raising funds for funeral and medical costs.
“I don’t even know how to thank [everyone]. A lot of people are reaching out. The donations… [they’re] immeasurable. And the prayers, everyone sending scriptures, everyone praying, all the calls, we thank [them] so much,” Fon Koh’s aunt, Madeleine Koblin said.
Over $13k have been raised for Fon Koh’s family, and over $20k has been raised for Garcia’s. Fon Koh was on life support but has now been disconnected and is making important steps forward in his recovery. Fon Koh’s Aunt tells us his medical team is awaiting an MRI and asks that the Salisbury University and surrounding communities keep Andy, Matthew, and Eyuael in their thoughts and prayers.
Salisbury University is holding a vigil to honor Garcia’s life on March 3rd from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
