EASTON, Md- Easton Bowl, nestled in the heart of downtown, has been a community gathering spot for decades. General Manager Teri Willis’ mission has been to reinvigorate a whole new generation of bowlers, while preserving a local landmark. “We have been around for over 60 years. So the center really started on Route 50 in the beginning, and it moved here. And it was only 16 lanes there; they added extra, made it bigger.”
With 20 lanes perfectly greased, you’d better make sure you hit your spots on the lane- Kolby and I got to indulge in some friendly competition. Now it took a bit for me to warm up- multiple gutter balls and a growing feel of frustration for both of us. Seems like we need some help, and Willis has the perfect solution for anyone looking to improve! “We do have coaches that will come in and help you get better at the sport. If you want to learn.”
The bowling alley is a great spot for people of all ages to learn. For me? My issue was the pressure building on myself- For someone who’s Dad is quite good at bowling, I was hurting the family image- I needed to lock in after a rough first frame. Our second game went a lot smoother; Kolby and I were heating up in a more spirited competition.
Finally, I did it- a strike, I think I might need to try out one of the mini games they offer after that. Willis explained, “Of course, you go down to the Angry Birds, which the kids chose mostly. And you have to follow in the corner of the screen the green pins that you’re trying to knock down.”
These mini games are a great way to introduce a new generation of bowlers into the sport. Easton Bowl has created multiple programs to ignite this interest with after-school programs and a mission to carry on this sport, which has been growing over recent years. Willis says, “More and more people are finding that it’s for everyone. Little kids, older people, we have leagues that fill the house on Wednesday nights and Friday nights, a full house. Senior leagues, and kids’ leagues.”
