City of Cambridge Announces 2025 Crime Report

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – 2025 ended up being another leap forward for Cambridge when it comes to reducing crime in the Dorchester County seat.

Police Chief Justin Todd gave us an overview of the crime report.

He tells WMDT, “Over the last several years, we’ve seen crime trending down as a whole. We were down, 12, 13 percent in our overall crime, in 2024…”

In that crime report, Sex-related crimes were down 40 percent from the previous year, with violent crimes down nine percent…

Including only two homicides, and one officer-involved shooting.

It’s something that Mayor Lajan Cephas says is the result of strong communication between the police and city leadership.

“I think our role as the city is to understand that our police department, they’re the experts that are professionals. You know, everyone is always great during the Monday morning quarterback, but it’s always great to actually trust the leadership,” says Mayor Cephas.

As violent crime rates continue to decrease in Cambridge, both Chief Todd and Mayor Cephas say they want to focus law enforcement efforts on a new avenue: responding to a mental health crisis.

Chief Todd mentions working with local health departments to handle more sensitive situations involving someone who might be mentally unwell.

He says, “How can we incorporate, co responder system and work with whether it be a local health department or another group to be able to assist us with those calls, to help, to help our crime rate and also help those subjects that are in need?”

And Mayor Cephas believes law enforcement will have a firm grip on this issue during 2026.

“Many of the challenges that we face. It’s a mental health crisis, that many other communities face. So it actually shows that we’re in control of this, and we have that ability of, changing the narrative of the City of Cambridge,” says Mayor Cephas.

Chief Todd also mentions the police department is looking to improve hiring and retention of officers.
