Winter storm dumps snow across Kent County

Kent County, DE — A strong winter storm swept through the Mid-Atlantic region yesterday, leaving Kent County, Delaware, under a blanket of snow and creating dangerous travel conditions.

Snow began falling early Sunday and continued through the afternoon, with Dover, Smyrna, and other parts of the county reporting six to six-and-a-half inches by nightfall. The storm delivered a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain that coated roads and sidewalks.

“The fire departments responded to a lot of electrical fires last night due to the ice and the weight of the snow,” said John A. Tinger, director of the Kent County Department of Public Safety. “Those have all been mitigated with no additional services needed.”

Authorities ordered the closure of all State of Delaware offices in Kent County and across the state today due to lingering hazardous conditions and continued sub-freezing temperatures, slowing cleanup efforts.

Residents are being advised to exercise caution if they must travel and to allow extra time for commuting. “Make sure you can stay warm and safe,” Tinger added. “If you have to go outside, give yourself enough time to safely navigate the roads.”

State crews are continuing snow and ice removal, but forecasters warn that more cold weather is expected later this week. Officials urge residents to monitor local weather updates before heading out.
