Salisbury Police Department’s red-light cameras began issuing fines to violators

SALISBURY, Md. The Salisbury Police Department’s red-light cameras began issuing fines to violators today. Locals are optimistic about the cameras, saying the devices will help improve driving and pedestrian safety, provided there is proper enforcement.

Downtown resident Leon Majors said, “It’s good because I’ve been downtown for the last seven years, and I’ve seen dangerous conditions due to the sheer number of people who run the lights.”

The Salisbury Police Department has completed its 30-day grace period of issuing warnings, and those who run red lights can now expect a citation with a $75 fine.

A visitor from Baltimore, Anton, said, “I think it’s for the safety of the people.”

Majors added, “It’s either enforce the laws or change them. Don’t just ignore the fact that everybody’s running the lights and pretend not to see it.”

He stressed that traffic laws must be enforced, or the community will face ongoing traffic problems. A father in the area, Deven Miller, said the red-light cameras and fines bring a sense of security.

“When you start getting fined for that stuff, because there are people who look at the camera and think, ‘You know, screw it,’ and still go through,” Miller said.

He noted that the red-light cameras are just a start but emphasized that the community needs additional driving safety measures.

“See down there? Sometimes I’m at Mojo’s just to be around, and I’ve seen people fly through there like they have something super important to do, regardless of the time — whether it’s six, seven, 10, or 11 o’clock,” Miller said.

He suggested adding more speed limit signs as part of the safety initiative, but believes the red-light camera fines are a step in the right direction.

“One day, someone’s going to wake up with a fine in the mail, and they’re going to be like, ‘Oh,’ and then I think people will start telling everyone else. I feel like it’s going to create a good snowball effect for people to start driving responsibly,” Miller said.

“Don’t run no red lights,” said Anton.

The city is also discussing the installation of additional red-light cameras at other intersections.
