Rehoboth Beach in Early Stages of Light Ordinance
(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del) – One beach community could become a little easier on the eyes this year.
Rehoboth Beaches’ Environmental Advisory Committee is suggesting lower level or “darkness friendly” lighting options in order to decrease light pollution in the coastal community.
The plans are currently in the early stages as the advisory committee presented the different lighting options to the city council earlier this month.
City Manager, Taylor Tedder says they’re already running some tests with less intense lighting.
“Typically those are 2700 K temperature. And so we’re actually looking to do two test luminaires on the boardwalk so that people will be able to see what those look like,” says Tedder.
Tedder says the city is still months out from making a decision, but they are planning to test things out later this year.
With Tedder giving us a rough estimate for when we could see a decision made.
He tells WMDT, “Ultimately it will take the board of commissioners to take this up after the committee has solid recommendations to look at adopting some type of ordinance. So I would say probably maybe in the next six months.”
The city of Rehoboth Beach doesn’t have any current ordinance when it comes to outdoor lighting.
