Ravens Coach John Harbaugh Fired after 18 Years
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Baltimore Ravens have fired longtime head coach John Harbaugh.
Team owner Steve Bisciotti announced the split on the Ravens social media on Tuesday, saying that the decision came following a comprehensive evaluation of the season.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision, given the tremendous 18 years we have spent together and the profound respect I have for John as a coach and, most importantly, as a great man of integity,” Bisciotti said. “I will always be grateful for the extraordinary hard work and dedication displayed by John and his staff throughout the many successful years.”
In the statement, Bisciotti stated that the team’s goal “has always been and will always be” to win Superbowl Championships. The Ravens have notably failed to secure a championship since their victory against the San Francisco 49ers in 2013.
“Well, I was hoping for a different kind of message on my last day here, someday, but that day has come today,” Harbaugh said in a statement issued to the Ravens social media. “It comes with disappointment certainly, but more with GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION.”
The coach went on to thank Bisciotti as well as the players themselves for the meaningful relationships built over the years. He earned the title of “Coach of the Year” in 2019.
The firing has resulted in mixed reactions from fans. Many attribute his removal to disagreements surrounding the direction of the team, as well as the belief that he had lost the locker room.
“We fully understand the expectations of our fans and everyone in the Ravens organization. Finding another strong leader and partner who will reflect these high standards is paramount,” Bisciotti continued. “We deeply appreciate our fans and will continue to work relentlessly to bring them, our city and the extended community the success they deserve.”
