Onancock Vol. Fire Dept. Rescues Dog from Icy Waters
ONANCOCK, Va. – The Onancock Volunteer Fire Department rescued a dog that fell into icy waters on Tuesday morning.
At 8:08 a.m. on Jan. 27, crews and emergency medical services responded to the Chesconessex Creek to help the trapped beagle-hound mix. A rescuer was placed in a cold-water ice suit and, using an inflatable raft, traversed the ice and wind to the dog.
The dog was safely pulled from the water and brought ashore. The canine was turned over to Accomack County Animal Control for treatment of hypothermia and minor injuries to its paws.
“We are grateful that the situation ended safely, not only for the dog but also for the responders, who are not frequently tasked with this type of emergency,” the department said on social media. “We thank the Accomack County Department of Public Safety, the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia Marine Resource Commission for their assistance in this incident.”
