Local farm offers Donkey cuddling experience
PRESTON, MD – For those seeking a unique way to relax and recharge, Campbell’s Lane Farm in Preston is offering an unconventional form of therapy: cuddling with donkeys.
The 50-acre Caroline County farm hosts 45-minute sessions where visitors can pet, brush, hug, and simply spend time with a gentle herd of donkeys. Participants often report feeling calmer, smiling more, and even experiencing what farm staff describe as a “nervous system reset.”
“People come here and there’s such joy and kindness, a real sense of peace,” said Anne Altvater, steward of Campbell’s Lane Farm. “Their breathing slows down, they laugh and smile in ways they haven’t in a while.”
After the session, visitors can linger by the fire pit with hot chocolate or tea, letting the tranquility linger a bit longer.
Tickets for the experience are $26.50 per person, while children under five can attend for free. Private group sessions are also available. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and participants are required to wear closed-toed shoes for safety in the donkey enclosures.
The farm’s herd includes both standard and miniature donkeys, such as Fiona, Silas, Diesel, Eloise, Spencer, Tilly, Tinkerbell, Maggie, and Boo. A staff member is present during each session to introduce visitors to the animals and guide interactions, though the donkeys are free to choose how to engage.
Beyond relaxation, spending time with the donkeys can provide emotional and physical benefits. Animal interactions have been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and promote mindfulness. The sessions also encourage social interaction and give visitors a chance to learn about donkey behavior and care.
Campbell’s Lane Farm has evolved from a traditional horse farm into a sanctuary for both humans and animals. “This is a space where people can deeply rest, feel safe, and find inspiration,” Altvater said. “Anything is possible when we come from a heart-centered awareness.”
