Laurel wrestling outduels Woodbridge in battle for Henlopen South supremacy
LAUREL, Del. – Laurel wrestling outlasted Woodbridge 40-36 Wednesday night in Laurel in a match of the two top teams in the Henlopen South.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-0 lead after pins in the first two bouts from Reggie Ferdinand and Nate Moore at 106 and 113.
The teams then traded pins with Woodbridge’s Gunner Scoles at 120 and Laurel’s Kade Wootten at 126 to make it 18-6 in favor of the home team.
Laurel’s advantage grew to 30-11 with pins from Ezekiel O’Hara (138) and Kenyen Littleton (144).
At 150 King Peden and Ian Messick went scoreless through three rounds, with Peden scoring first in the extra period to win the bout 3-0 and keep Woodbridge within striking distance at 30-14.
The pivotal bout of the match was at 190 with Laurel’s Kymani Roberts and Woodbridge’s Jenel Sterile, with the score at 34-24 in Laurel’s favor.
Sterile took an early 3-1 lead, and led 5-4 in the second round before Roberts captured the momentum and carried an 8-5 lead into the 3rd round. Roberts pinned Sterile with 20 seconds remaining in the third round, extending Laurels lead to 40-24 and putting the match out of reach with only two bouts remaining.
