POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – The Delmarva Discovery Museum has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser as they prepare for their busiest season of the year.

Christy Gordon, the Executive Director said that they need the extra financial backing because of the otters they house.

“We’ve had it out a week, and it has been very successful and we have been very thankful for everybody that has donated to the gofundme. This is what we needed to get us through, and we want to make sure the animals are taking care of, and we have everything we need for a successful busy season.”

The Delmarva Discovery Museum has been a focal point in Pocomoke City for over 100 years, located on the banks of the iconic Pocomoke River. The museum not only takes care of the otters, but also the countless other live exhibits. Gordon explains the challenges to WMDT.

“The first month or two is always a challenge as a non-profit, and every non-profit has the same experience right now. So we were trying to think of a way we can use some help.”

Gordon added that taking care of those otters – Mack and Tuck – is a very expensive operation. Gordon confirmed to WMDT it costs well over $1,000 dollars monthly to feed them and keep them healthy.

“We’re looking for a bridge that can carry us over, until next month when our field trips start and tourists start coming in, and the weather is great.”

She believes what makes the Discovery Museum so special and unique is not only the history you learn about the Eastern Shore, but the ability to have these otters, turtles, and shark exhibits for people to explore.

“We’re trying to keep the history and teach them what’s right there in their backdoor, a lot of people have no idea how incredible the Eastern Shore is and what it has to offer.”
