Decatur girl’s basketball topples Wi-Hi in Bayside South affair

SALISBURY, Md. – Stephen Decatur girl’s basketball took down Wi-Hi 56-45 Monday night in Salisbury.

The visiting Seahawks opened with strong defense, earning a 10-6 lead after the first frame of what was an intense and physical game.

The Tribe responded in the second quarter, flipping the game to lead 18-15 with about two minutes before half–but Stephen Decatur countered with a 6-1 run of their own to regain the lead at 21-19 heading into the break.

The teams went back-and-forth into the third quarter, with Wi-Hi taking a 30-27 lead late in the period. From that point, Decatur outscored the Tribe by 14 to close out a hard-fought road victory.

Se’Lah Foreman led Wi-Hi with 27 points on the night.

Stephen Decatur was powered offensively by Maleah Blake’s 20 points, with Lila Gunther adding 15.

Decatur moves to 5-1 on the season after handing Wi-Hi their first loss, dropping the Tribe to 6-1.

After the game, Stephen Decatur Head Coach Corey Holland said, “I thought the girls did a tremendous job of just trying to stay with it. They stayed poised.”

He praised their opponent and noted the significance of the road victory within the Bayside South: “Give credit to Wi-Hi, they’re an exceptional basketball team. I thought that we rebounded the basketball well when we needed to…We’ve got a very young basketball team in there. Those girls are super excited about what’s happening. I think this is one of the first times our seniors have beaten this group, so I’m super proud of them. It’s a big win for us and hopefully we’ll continue to move forward.”
