A local coffee shops brings history and unique drinks to the forefront of Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. — In a town full of cute shops, local government buildings, and little restaurants. A coffee shop is a great stopping point, especially one as unique as Brick Row Market. In WMDT’s new series, Shore to Shore, we highlight local businesses that have shaped the shore on our weekend show.

Brick City Owner, Alex Scott said, “Ten years ago, I purchased the brick room, turned it into Salisbury’s craft cocktail lounge and then did the smoked old fashioned.”

What started out with a love for unique drinks and east coast history- quickly turned into a local family business. For the Salisbury native, that passion turned into a dream brought to life.

“I opened Brick Row Market to complement the brick room, creating Brick City. The goal is to continue to grow from here. To provide even more food and higher end options to downtown that a lot of Salisbury doesn’t get to see.” said Scott.

Brick City, draws on Scott’s historical eye and prohibition-era influences, bringing specialty cocktails and coffee’s to downtown.

“I really threw myself into it and, you know, every aspect of every cup of coffee we make here is the absolute best and it’s the same. The same logic. I’ve applied to cocktails.” said Scott.

The signature drinks change every 3-month cycle, a success in a town that’s always on the move.

Scott said, “To have my, my successful bar business be able to support something that is a bit of a third space for Salisbury, where everyone from all the city employees, to, to local businesses, lawyers. WMDT”

Although WMDT runs on coffee, we are not the only company in downtown Salisbury that runs on coffee, but we were able to learn how to make one of their specialties, a smoked maple latte.

Cafe manager, Ellery Beck said, “First I’m going to pull my shot and while I get those pulling, I’m going to set up my steamer.”

The special Latte has Beck, ready to make another.

“We use, Lapsang Souchong syrup for that, that we make from scratch and it’s a smoked black tea. It’s smoked over pine leaves, so it tastes like you’re drinking a bonfire, and you just really can’t find that anywhere else.”

She said the creative freedom of making drinks from scratch tied together with community connection makes Brick Row Market more than just a cafe.
