UPDATE: 17-Year-Old Arrested for Shooting at Jefferson Apartments
UPDATE: Police have arrested a 17-year-old of Ellendale in connection with a shooting that injured a 10-year-old on Nov. 28.
The teenager is charged with first degree assault, four counts of first degree reckless endangerment, four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and criminal mischief over $5,000. Officers say they made the arrest after numerous days of investigation, including dozens of interviews and evidence collection and examinations.
The juvenile defendant was arraigned and subsequently committed to the Stevenson House State Detention Facility in default of $141,000 bail on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Police learned new details during their investigation, including that the suspected shooter fired 30 rounds from an assault-type rifle before fleeing in a silver vehicle.
At the time of the shooting, there were a total of five occupants inside the apartment asleep. One occupant, a 10-year-old child, was sleeping near a window and suffered a gunshot wound to the forearm. This child was airlifted to AI DuPont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington for surgery, and was subsequently listed in serious but stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
LEWES, Del. – The Lewes Police Department is investigating a shooting that injured a juvenile in the early hours of Friday morning.
On Nov. 28, officers were alerted to multiple shots fired at Jefferson Apartments on Kings Highway. Upon arrival on the scene, police learned that an unknown suspect fired numerous shots at a single apartment building. A juvenile located inside the apartment sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Police say this incident remains under investigation, and that they are currently following numerous leads.
Authorities believe this was a targeted shooting incident and that other members of the public were not and are not at risk.
