Tips for Older Driver Safety Awareness Week

SALISBURY, Md. — This week is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week.

Local police departments are encouraging senior citizens and their families to take advantage of Maryland’s resources, which help older drivers stay safe and maintain their independence.

Although older drivers are among the safest on the road, data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows they are more likely to be seriously injured or killed in car accidents. Last year, senior citizens accounted for 8.5% of roadway fatalities in Maryland.

The Salisbury Police Department advises residents to drive carefully and always look both ways.

“Make sure you’re taking your time when you’re approaching intersections; we’ve had a lot of accidents, unfortunately, recently involving intersections. Always pay attention, look both ways — not just once, but twice. Just make sure you’re staying in your lane and being alert to everything around you, so you don’t cause more of a problem than you realize,” said Lt. Brandon Caton.

The Maryland Department of Transportation is offering a variety of free programs to help senior citizens stay safe and confident behind the wheel. For more information on older driver safety, visit ZeroDeathsMD.gov.
