Sleep Medicine at TidalHealth

LEWES, Del. – In this week’s Health Beat, brought to you by TidalHealth, WMDT spoke with Dr. Kunal Agarwal, medical director of TidalHealth Sleep Medicine of Eastern Sussex.

Dr. Agarwal tells us that his primary care practice focuses on the whole person and longitudinal care, rather than just their sleep component. Sleep disorders can vary by age, but most of his patients are aged 12 years or older.

“Common sleep disorders I diagnose and manage include mainly obstructive sleep apnea; but, we also address central sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders, as well as narcolepsy or excessive daytime sleepiness,” Dr. Agarwal says.

Sleep health is important, as untreated sleep disorders can impact an individual’s overall health, putting them at risk for conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or strokes. It can also have adverse impacts on a patient’s mood, personality, energy levels, and quality of life.

“Patients should really seek out help for primary care for sleep issues,” Dr. Agarwal emphasized. “If you are overdue for a checkup, or if you or your child cannot sleep well, I would definitely reach out to see your primary care or sleep specialist because I think early care leads to better outcomes.”
