Man killed in Tangier Island Golf Cart Crash, Virginia State Police say

TANGIER ISLAND, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Friday on Tangier Island.

Police said a 2016 EZ-GO golf cart was traveling west on Factory Road around 1 a.m. when it left the roadway, struck a sign and came to rest in a nearby marsh.

The driver, Gordon W. Wheatley, 83, of Tangier Island, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The crash remains under investigation.
