I.G. Burton joins Delaware’s winter preparedness week
DELAWARE — Delaware officials are urging residents to prepare for hazardous winter conditions as Governor Matt Meyer proclaims December 1–5 Winter Weather Awareness Week. State agencies — including the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), the Office of Highway Safety (OHS), and DelDOT — are partnering with i.g. Burton Auto Group to promote road safety and emergency preparedness.
As part of the initiative, i.g. Burton dealerships across Kent, New Castle and Sussex counties are giving away 100 free Car Safety Packs at their winter auto sales events. The kits include basic emergency items that can help drivers who become stranded during snow, ice, or freezing conditions.
“This is a beginner kit, and it’s important because you never know what’s going to happen,” said Sara LeBright of i.g. Burton, noting Delaware’s unpredictable temperature swings. “One day it’s 80 degrees and the next day it can be 50 and freezing.”
Governor Meyer said the week serves as a reminder for residents to be prepared, slow down, and stay safe on the roads as temperatures drop. Agencies are encouraging drivers to winterize their vehicles, check tire and wiper conditions, and pack emergency items such as blankets, snacks, jumper cables, and flashlights.
“Taking time now to prepare your vehicle can mitigate the impact of severe weather,” said OHS Director Sharon Bryson.
DEMA Director A.J. Schall stressed the importance of having a winter-ready emergency kit, and DelDOT leaders urged drivers to give snowplows plenty of space and adjust their speed in poor visibility.
Residents can find winter travel checklists and preparedness guidance at PrepareDE.org, including tips on driving in snow and ice, staying informed through weather alerts, and what to do if stranded.
Free safety kits are available at participating i.g. Burton locations in Newark, Dover and Lewes during their winter sales events.
