Comprehensive Breast Care at TidalHealth

SALISBURY, Md. – In this week’s Health Beat, brought to you by TidalHealth, WMDT spoke with Dr. Sharnell Smith, a fellowship trained breast surgeon.

Dr. Smith walked us through the comprehensive breast care offered at TidalHealth, and the steps involved in diagnosing and treating breast cancer.

“After the mammogram or ultrasound, which are abnormal, we see them discuss biopsy options,” Dr. Smith says. “We see them after the biopsies are done, whether they are benign or malignant. And then we help them get coordinated care from there, whether that be surgery or a future follow up.”

She emphasized that her work does not just encompass surgical treatment, but rather all steps of the treatment plan. Yet, it remains something she is passionate about.

“I was in medical school, and surgery was my first rotation as a third year medical student, and I was terrified… [but] it did it feel as full and as useful anywhere else on any other rotation. I felt like I was really changing people’s lives and making a difference,” she tells us. “I’ve seen so many people be impacted by breast cancer, both family as well as friends and other people close to my community. And that was a place where I felt like I could really make a huge impact.”

Dr. Smith welcomes new patients to approach her with any and all questions they may have.

“I leave room for them to ask a lot of questions. And in that time, I feel like I’m building a relationship with them. I want you to feel comfortable with me and trust that I know what I’m doing, know what I’m talking about.”
