Cambridge Residents Evacuated as Police Breach Apartment

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Officers from the Cambridge Police Department (CPD) and Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office breached a barricaded apartment to serve an extraditable warrant on Friday night.

At 9:23 p.m. on Dec. 19, officers and K9 units responded to an apartment in the 500 block of Glenburn Avenue to arrest 30-year-old Delorenze Rushaan Dukes of Cambridge. Dukes had a warrant out of Delaware for stalking, harassment, and multiple counts of felony breach of the peace.

When officers arrived at the complex, they located a vehicle that Dukes had been operating and tried to make contact with him at the door of the residence. Dukes could be heard inside moving around furniture, but police say he failed to come to the door. Officers positively identified that Dukes was the one inside the apartment, as he had called 911 and been pinged at the Glenburn Avenue location. Officers on the outside of the apartment building also observed Dukes come to a rear window before ducking out of view.

Officers made repeated attempts to communicate with Dukes and get him to vacate for a period of time. CPD had multiple tenants of surrounding apartments vacate their apartments to a safe location within the apartment building until the situation was resolved.

Authorities were eventually able to breach the barricade and enter the apartment at 11:57 p.m. An interior drone was sent into the apartment and located Dukes laying face down on a bed. Through the drone, officers ordered Dukes to exit the apartment with his hands up, at which time he complied without incident.

Dukes was then placed under arrest and transported to CPD for processing and his initial appearance before a Court Commissioner. Dukes was later turned over to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on a temporary commitment. He is charged with fugitive from justice out of Delaware, failure to obey a lawful order, and related charges.
