Worcester County & Ocean City have agreement on wastewater facility
WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – Ocean City and Worcester County have finally come to an agreement on waste water capacity.
Officials in Worcester County will now use additional waste water capacity at the OC wastewater treatment facility.
Commissioners President, Ted Elder, said what happened to the sewer districts.
“We’ve had some failures on some of injection wells. There are really not many places you can send it, Ocean City has quite the abundance of availability.”
Both the Assateague Pointe and Landings communities are suffering from failing facilities. Currently, they have been taken their sewage from the nearby Mystic Harbour neighborhood.
The agreement extends to 170,000 gallons per day, with 100,000 to serve the landings. And 70,000 gallons to Assateague Pointe.
President Elder said this agreement was a cheaper option than fixing the two sewer districts entirely.
“Bringing it back up to specs would cost several million dollars, and with it pumping into mystic harbor, and that harbor is approaching its limit.”
Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said it’ll benefit both sides. “It also does create some excess capacity when some of the sewage doesn’t have to go through Mystic Harbour,” said Mayor Meehan. “Really, that was a win-win for them, and we thought it was important as a good neighbor to do that.”
Elder says he’s happy the popular resort town and the county could come to a reasonable agreement.
“Very thankful for the town of Ocean City to come to the table.”
