Wicomico County’s Long-Awaited Verizon Cell Tower Now Active

WICOMICO CO. Md. — Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano announced the completion of a new Verizon cell tower on the county’s west side Monday. The tower, officially known as the Wicomico Cedar Hill Antenna, is located in the Bivalve area.

The tower will improve connectivity in the county’s underserved regions, including the west side, which has long struggled with weak wireless coverage.

Giordano said the tower will ensure faster response capabilities for first responders and emergency crews. “We were really concerned about public safety. Some of our deputies that respond down there have Verizon cell phones,” Giordano said.

The Wicomico County Council approved the resolution authorizing the tower lease in May. The lessee is Cellco Partnership, doing business as Verizon Wireless.

Giordano hopes the improved cell service will bring more visitors to the west side’s parks and businesses. The tower is near Cedar Hill Park in Bivalve. “It’s easy to get lost down there, so you always want to have your GPS available, and sometimes that wasn’t available. Being able to have full cell service, especially being a Verizon customer, is definitely huge,” she said.

The tower already provides service for AT&T and T-Mobile customers and will now serve Verizon customers as well.
