Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk Honors Local Heroes in Lewes
LEWES, Del. — The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, created to honor the legacy of New York firefighter Stephen Siller, is once again bringing the community together in remembrance and service. Siller gave his life on September 11, 2001, after running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to help others — a sacrifice that continues to inspire thousands nationwide.
This weekend, the Delmarva community will take part in the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk at Cape Henlopen State Park, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. The event supports the foundation’s mission to provide mortgage-free homes for fallen first responders, veterans, and Gold Star families.
Local businesses, including I.G. Burton and the Lewes and Milford Meineke, are among the event’s sponsors. Charlie Burton, president and owner of I.G. Burton, said it’s important for area businesses to step up.
“The organization is involved in supporting the local community,” Burton said. “There are individuals here buying homes for that. They’re helping out right here in your local community, in addition to supporting veterans, Gold Star families, and military members nationwide.”
Justin Brown, operations manager for Lewes and Milford Meineke, said supporting the foundation goes beyond charity.
“Supporting them is a way of saying thank you to the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day,” Brown said. “We’re neighbors, friends, and family. Supporting Tunnel to Towers isn’t just a charity — it’s a reflection of our values.”
Organizers are encouraging residents to come out and show their support for local veterans, police officers, firefighters, and other first responders.
