Space Heaters Lead to House Fire in Onancock
ONANCOCK, Va. – The Onancock Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD) responded to a residential fire that killed two house cats on Monday evening.
At 6:18 p.m. on Nov. 10, crews from OVFD responded to Jackson Street following reports of black smoke emerging from the windows of the residence.
The crew made an interior fire attack and found heavy fire conditions throughout the entirety of the structure. Primary searches were conducted and resulted in the discovery of two deceased cats in the home. The fire was marked under control after 23 minutes while crews performed extensive overhaul.
One resident from the home was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. There were no injuries to firefighters operating on the scene.
The fire was determined to be started by a space heater in the home. The OVFD reminds residents to follow all manufacturers recommendations on electrical cord usage and proximity of items near the heaters.
