FRUITLAND, Md. – The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a special guest Thursday afternoon. State Senator Justin Ready crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to visit the Eastern Shore.

He spoke with chamber members about what kind of work lawmakers will deliver when they return to Annapolis, according to CEO Bill Chambers. “His view on what we can expect in the next general assembly session.”

State Senator Ready describing the state. “Maryland is really an unfriendliest place for a lot of businesses, our tax policies and a lot of regulatory policies are very unfriendly.”

Hosted at the Black Diamond Lodge, Sen. Ready is helping face issues that are occurring on the Eastern Shore.

“It’s really great working on problems that impact both sides of the bay, but also specifically the Eastern Shore issues like agriculture, Chesapeake Bay issues, and fighting against offshore wind.”

Topics included Maryland’s business climate, and the current shape of Maryland’s Budget. “The budget crisis continues to go, we now estimate a $1.4 billion dollar budget shortfall in fiscal year 2027,” said Chambers. “A lot of concerns for our business community about what potential new fees in taxes this means.”

He adds Salisbury’s business community is already bracing themselves. Chambers also mentions how chamber members are planning to redistrict.

“Necessary, it’s got the business community very concerned in what that means for the future of the state. Right now 7 of the 8 congressional districts in Maryland are Democratic controlled districts. So we’re all wondering why this push for redistricting now.”

The Chamber’s next event will be the 2026 Southern Delmarva Economic Forecast.
