Salisbury University Hosts Community Clean-Up Event
SALISBURY, Md. — Salisbury University’s Student Government Association hosted its 18th annual “I Love Salisbury” community engagement event on Saturday, Nov. 10.
More than 400 students volunteered to help clean up the city and spread the love. Volunteers raked leaves at the Salisbury Zoo, picked up litter, made chalk drawings for students at Pemberton Elementary, and created no-sew blankets for area shelters.
Student Government Association President Jahnaiya Sutherland said the annual event offers students an opportunity to give back to the community.
“‘I Love Salisbury’ is one of our campus-wide, student-run initiatives to actually give back to the Salisbury community that gives a lot to us as students. A lot of times, nonprofits in our area may not have as much volunteer help as they need to complete every task, so we try to help where we can,” Sutherland said.
The organization will host a similar event this spring, tentatively scheduled for April 12. Students can volunteer to help residents with yard work and clean up litter throughout the city of Salisbury.
“We take them out into the areas, usually local residents’ homes, so that they can rake, weed, or do whatever is needed. We try to focus on areas where there may be mobility issues,” said Deshaunna Shaw, director of civic engagement for the Student Government Association.
