OC Beach Heroes provides pivotal community service cleaning the beach
OCEAN PINES, Md. – A local group in Ocean City is doing the little things to make sure the popular resort town stays clean even during the offseason.
Beach Hero, Leslie Eisenhauer, tells WMDT, environmental stewardship is the name of the game. “We’re kind of like the extra set of boots on the ground, we go into the nooks and crannies where the town doesn’t go.”
Every Tuesday, the Ocean City Beach Heroes meet to volunteer all year long. These volunteers are motivated by community service, like picking up the trash, not money.
According to Colleen DeGroodt, the group has made significant contributions.
“we just tracked from January to the end of October this year, we picked up 2,900 bags of trash, which translates to about 7 tons of trash.”
HOW THINGS ARE DONE?
These heroes make sure they get into every crevice of the town. On Tuesday, they cleaned between 4th Street and Baltimore Ave.
They split the group into pairs on the ocean and bay side.
Next Tuesday, November 18th, the group will hit 13th Street near First Presbyterian Church of Ocean City.
The following Tuesday, they will clean 40th Street, near the Ocean City Convention Center.
All events start at 9 a.m. and end at 10 a.m.
Leslie Eisenhauer says it’s all about giving back. “We tightened up a mission and our vision, and we’re supporting the town of Ocean City help keep Ocean City litter free campaign.”
WHO’S INVOLVED?
Eisenhauer adds the colder months see a decrease in volunteers, many of whom are based on Delmarva. “Most of the people that come in the winter are full time residents in the Ocean City area.”
Things pick up during the action-packed summers. DeGroodt said even vacationers take the time to service the community.
“Higher peaks of volunteers, so most people come during their vacation to volunteer. They put in an hour on a Tuesday morning and help us.”
