Handsell to Break Ground on Three Cultures Center Saturday

Handsell Breaking Ground

(DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md) – Just a few feet away from the Handsell House in rural Dorchester County, a plot of land is set to become the Handsell Foundation’s new Three Cultures Center as they’re getting set to break ground this Saturday.

The Handsell Foundation will be breaking ground on the Three Cultures Center after years of planning and fundraising.

“Three Culture Center will bring us an all weather venue to, tell our message about how the cultures came here together on this site and built America and Dorchester County in the process,” says Handsell Board President, George Barnett.

That’s why representatives from the board and those who represent the local tribes are helping prepare for Saturday’s groundbreaking.

As they also can’t wait to share the history of Handsell at the Three Cultures Center.

Robert Cole, a representative for the Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians says, “And it’s a big win for African-American history. This was once an actual place, and so it’s about getting that story out, preserving it. The great people’s ancestors and descendants.”

On Saturday, they and the tribes of the Nanticoke look forward to the center’s completion so they can continue sharing their stories.

“We’re an excited bunch of people. We we believe in what we’re doing. We like telling the story. We like educating our local community and the broader community,” says George.

The groundbreaking will take place at the Handsell House at 4837 Indiantown Road this Saturday, November 8th, at 11 A.M.

Festivities will follow, running until 4 P.M.
