Eden local gives back to displaced family
Fruitland, Md. – When Kristy Marvel of Eden, Maryland heard one of the guests at the Hampton Inn she works in call for room service because she was embarrassed to smell heavily of smoke, her told WMDT her heart broke.
Moved by the experience of a family displaced by a fire last week, she said she leapt into action, calling on her “warriors” on Facebook to help a family in need.
“I kind of explained the situation briefly, and within minutes I had people reaching out to me just wanting to help,” she said. “It was it was very heartwarming and kind of gave me hope for humanity again.”
After a fire displaced a family of three, Marvel said American Red Cross had relocated them to a Hampton Inn hotel in Fruitland, Maryland where she works. When she heard of their situation, she called on her Facebook network to help donate clothes, food and other necessities.
She said that she had read an article that claimed that over 80% of Americans are one tragedy away from “despair” and wanted a way to pay kindness forward since one never knows when tragedy might strike them. when a little bit of kindness could go a long way, saying “every little bit helps” especially ahead of the season of giving.
Especially ahead of the holiday and “giving” season, she said she wanted to make a difference, no matter how small.
She said she hopes her act will inspire others to “pay it forward,” especially during the holiday season.
“Even if it’s going to Food Lion and getting a gift card of $20 and giving it to someone in need,” she said, no act is too small.
