Dorchester Historical Society Hosts Re-Reading of the Gettysburg Address

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) –  History buffs braved the cold as the Dorchester County Historical Society was holding a re-reading of the Gettysburg Address.

Town Crier, David Rose says getting to take part in the re-reading on the anniversary of the historic event is something special.

Rose tells WMDT, “Why do it here? Why do it now? Well, this is the anniversary of, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. It was delivered on the 19th… and this is a place that we want to tie in Dorchester history to the, effort that Lincoln had in preserving the Union.”

To add on to Wednesday’s re-reading, local historian, Paul Callahan spoke to those in attendance at the Meredyth House. And a decent sized crowd came to to hear the address and the history of the Civil War on the Eastern Shore.

“We had a lot of great people who were interested in our history. We had a lot of questions and answers afterwards. It really was very, very well done on this wonderful historical site. There with the Dorchester, and the Cambridge Historical Society,” says Callahan.

The Dorchester County Historical Society is planning to step things up for next year’s re-reading of the Gettysburg Address.

Director, Marcos Salaverria says, “…History has to be shared. The history has to be faced and talked about in order for us to continue to preserve not just the physical homes, not just the physical objects, but the stories here in the heart of the Chesapeake.”

The Dorchester County Historical Society also offered tours of the Meredyth House, showcasing the Eastern Shore’s importance in the Civil War.
