Dorchester Co. Burial Site Preservation Board Holding Gravesite Tours
(CHURCH CREEK, Md) – Some of the headstones at the Old Trinity Church cemetery in Church Creek have been there for decades, if not centuries.
And as Reverend Daniel Dunlap tells us, some of them have seen better days.
“It’s a lot of upkeep. I wish we could say that we could repair every stone in a timely fashion. But it’s just impossible to to do. Especially with some of the stones as old as they are,” says Dunlap.
That’s why a group of board members who make up the Dorchester County Burial Site Preservation Board are hoping to correct the course.
Inviting the community to tour grave sites in Church Creek, with the goal of re-establishing the board as part of the county.
Karen Tolley is a board member of the current Preservation Board. She tells WMDT, “We’re trying lots of different things. We’re trying to get out into the public. And also, let the public know that, we need this engagement, we need the public to engage with us.”
The goal of this tour is to interest people in helping restore some of the headstones at rural cemeteries across the county.
As well as to educate the next generation. And help honor the legacy of families with loved ones buried in Church Creek.
Reverend Dunlap says, “Many of the names in the cemetery are their names. And their families may be forgotten over time, but nonetheless recognizable.”
The Burial Site Preservation Board is hoping for a large turnout this weekend. They’re hoping that people will take notice. This way, cemeteries like the one at Old Trinity Church can get the help it needs.
And that the memory from these headstones can live on beyond etchings.
The tour will begin at 9 A.M. on Saturday, November 8th, starting at the Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company, located at 1902 Church Creek Road.
