Attorney General Anthony Brown visits UMES to celebrate veterans at dinner gala
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Veterans have made an enormous sacrifice to serve the beautiful country we all call America. The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and University of Maryland Eastern Shore partnered for a dinner gala event to honor veterans.
Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown was the keynote speaker. He said the event was all about celebrating those who serve. “Really, tonight is about celebrating veterans. For the commitment the men and women have made to our country. A commitment that fewer and fewer people are ready, willing, and able to make.”
The event has been ongoing for a few years. For Bill Chambers, President of the Salisbury Chamber, the cause elevates its value.
“The neat thing about the event tonight is we raise money for veterans to attend the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Those proceeds raised will support the Silver Star Scholarship, which is specifically for student veterans enrolled or sons and daughters of veterans.
In the few years the event has taken place, the chamber has raised $45,000 dollars.
Maryland’s Secretary of Housing and Community Development Jake Day emceed the event. He gave several toasts to each branch of the United States military.
“Critically, I think it’s so important we honor and recognize those who have served our country.”
Attorney General Brown is the first African American to hold the position in Maryland’s history. He emphasizes to WMDT the importance veterans have for our community, stating that many serve even after serving.
“You see that time and time again, that veterans continue to serve the community, their state, their nation even after they take off the uniform.”
Chambers told WMDT that the goal of the event was to raise $15,000.
